1 Getting to Athens

For most of our international guests, flying to Athens and then connecting to a ferry will be the easiest option.

Plane tickets for Athens can be purchased through most commercial airlines. The site for Athens airport is http://www.aia.gr/.

Staying the night in Athens

Depending on your flight time and the ferry schedule, you might need to spend the night in Athens.  If so, the easiest way to get to Athens city centre is by taxi and it would cost around 40EUR.  Alternatively, you can use public transport:

  • Metro

For guests who wish to take the train, Eleftherios Venizelos International Airport is connected to the center of Athens via an excellent public transportation system (Metro). The Metro Line 3 train runs between the airport and Athens every 30 minutes-on the hour and half hour.  Travel time on the Metro Line 3 train to the city centre (Syntagma Square) is approximately 36 minutes.
Fare per person: €8 one-way

  • Bus

A 24hrs public bus route connects the airport with the greater Athens area via the Route Χ95 Syntagma - Athens Airport Express. The ticket price is €5 for a one-way trip from the Airport to the center of Athens. You may purchase tickets from the bus driver, in the airport Metro station or at any public transportation ticket outlets.

The next day, you can take a taxi or the metro to the Port of Piraeus.

From Athens airport to the Port of Piraeus

Ferries to Sifnos depart from the Port of Piraeus.

  • Taxi: €60

  • Metro: Use Metro line 3 from the Athens International Airport and change at Monastiraki to Metro line 1. Estimated journey time is 60 minutes.

  • Bus: Use Route X96 Piraeus - Athens International Airport.

3 From Piraeus to Sifnos

There are two types of boats going to Sifnos: regular ferries (the journey takes about 5.5 hours and is operated by Cyclades Ferries) and fast ferries (the journey takes about 3 hours and is operated by Sea Jets and Aegean Speed Lines).  Tickets can be purchased by phone or through our travel agent, Thesaurus Travel (see on the right side of the page).

Please note that ferry schedules for 2014 may not be confirmed yet. For perspective, here are some tentative schedules we received so far.

The following sites contain all the information on Sifnos’ ferries and itineraries for the summer months:

ww.aegeanspeedlines.gr

www.ferries.gr

www.openseas.gr

* Important note:  The schedules can change even after they are published.  To help you plan ahead and deal with such inconveniences, you should contact our travel agent from Thesaurus Travel.

Please allow yourselves some margin when booking flights and ferries. Additionally, itineraries are subject to change and spots are limited so please make sure to book your ferries at least a couple of months in advance!

You can receive your tickets directly at the port, as kiosks and the agency are located close to the port gates/ peers from where the ferries depart. You may also have your tickets delivered to you but there may be a courier charge for that.

Piraeus is very large, but platforms are numbered, and you will see direction boards, so just pay attention to your platform number.

4 After Arriving on Sifnos

The boat from Pireaus will arrive at Sifnos' port Kamares - beware that Sifnos may not be the first stop.  There are public buses to get to Apollonia, Artemonas and Platys Gialos.  Alternatively, you can take a taxi from Kamares, or order pick-up at the port through the travel agency Thesaurus.

During your stay you may travel by using the frequent bus services between Apollonia (the main town) and the other villages.  Bus times change according to season, so we will update the website closer to the wedding date.

Still, the most convenient transport option is to rent a car or a scooter.  Travel agency Thesaurus will be happy to help you with rentals.  Alternatively, you can check the following companies and compare prices:

The island also has 10 taxis which can be used throughout your stay as needed. You may find their phone numbers under the Useful Information section of our website.

Please note that we will be providing a shuttle service for guests on the day of the wedding to get you from Platys Gialos to the church and to the reception and then back to your hotel.  The bus schedules will be shared closer to the time of the wedding.

Please inform us if you plan to take a shuttle.  Simply email Thesaurus Travel (aegean@thesaurus.gr).

5 After Sifnos, Connecting to Other Islands

Sifnos has a regular direct connection to Milos, Serifos and Kythnos islands, which usually departs 2-3 times daily on the way to or from Athens.

Sifnos also has a connection to Paros, Santorini and Folegandros, although this connection frequency tends to vary from year to year and is usually only between 1 to 3 times a week.

For any such travel, we recommend that you contact Thesaurus Travel to find out about ferry schedules before you finalize your bookings.
